RFID at the Grain Storage Facility

RFID at the Grain Storage Facility

The team at RFID Ukraine successfully implemented a radio-frequency identification system for vehicle transport within an automation system for monitoring, accounting, and moving agricultural products at grain storage facilities in the Vinnytsia and Zhytomyr regions.

For the comprehensive modernization of the accounting system and the creation of an automated vehicle control system, our team carried out conceptual design of the RFID vehicle identification system, conducted preliminary modeling and demonstration tests, and coordinated all integration aspects of the accounting, management, monitoring, and video surveillance systems into a single information complex.

After coordination with the general contractor and related subcontractors, the software was installed on specialized operational accounting servers, and the equipment was mounted at key control points:

  1. Registration of vehicles
  2. Laboratory sampling points
  3. Waiting area
  4. Truck scales
  5. Grain unloading bunkers
  6. Grain loading bunkers for vehicles
  7. Checkpoints for vehicle entry without weight control

Despite tight deadlines before the start of the harvest season, the RFID Ukraine team did an excellent job! The RFID system was installed, configured, and handed over for integration into the grain storage facility’s accounting system. During the integration setup, certain issues arose — in particular, “loss of tag reading.” The analysis showed that the problems were caused by the main accounting system being cloud-based. The issue was resolved by providing redundant data transmission channels and configuring the communication equipment.

Overall, the automation of the grain storage facility using RFID technology showed excellent results: the average frequency of reading errors requiring repeated scans is just 1 tag per 2,000 vehicles. Such cases are not critical, since the main goal — speeding up grain intake and increasing the throughput of the grain storage facility — was achieved at 99.99%.

To increase system reliability, we recommend placing operational accounting servers directly on site. This architecture ensures that all operational information is stored locally, while commercial information remains in the cloud. This is the most stable, reliable, and secure option for automated accounting and control at grain storage facilities.
